What a great gift!

The William G. Pomeroy Foundation recently awarded the Solvay Public Library two grants to place historic markers in the Village of Solvay. The markers are part of the library’s “Community Vitality” initiative and meet the Pomeroy Foundation’s goals to promote historic tourism. One marker recognizes the “Solar Salt Industry” in the Village and is located on what was the Erie Canal on Bridge Street. The second marker recognizes the first schoolhouse in Solvay, currently Pasta’s Pizza and Deli, and is placed across the street on the corner of Bridge Street and Milton Avenue.

The Pomeroy Foundation historic marker program educates the public about local historic events, fostering historic tourism. Towns and villages where the markers are placed can benefit with visitors attracted to these sites and corresponding publicity about their community. Celebrating history spurs economic vitality. As of April 2012, the Foundation has funded over 70 markers in 7 New York counties.

In addition to the placement of the markers, the Solvay Public Library has held local history programs and produced educational brochures. Historical photos and literature are placed throughout the library, making the facility serve a dual purpose as a local history museum. The library website, www.solvaylibrary.org, provides access to its collections which include the archives of Solvay Process and the Solvay Union Free School District. A historic marker is located on the library’s lawn, placed by the Solvay Centennial Committee in 2001.

For a copy of the library’s marker grant brochure, “The Solvay Saltworks: The Salt Wars that Charged up the Canal,” send a self addressed envelope to Cara Burton, Director, Solvay Public Library, 615 Woods Road, Solvay, New York 13209.
