On June 14th, OCPL is updating our online catalog! Most of the cool new features will only be seen by library staff, but will enable us to provide better circulation services. One feature you will see is a more detailed display for the item locations screen.

Now you can hover over the book cover in the list of search result to see a lightbox of summary information.

Say Cheese!

Solvay Public Library has joined the city branches in requiring a photo i.d. when you present your library card. This policy has been implemented to help secure your library account and prevent errors.

For your convenience, we have a digital camera at our desk to take your photo and attach it to your library account. We will then see your photograph when we scan your library card. Otherwise, you will have to display a drivers license or other photo i.d. For more details, please ask our staff or CameraFlyer.

Lots of classic books are downloadable for free on the Internet.

Beyond the book printed on paper pages, you may want to try electronically delivered books. These may be audiobooks or e-books (the text is on a computer, not paper). These have become increasingly popular because the electronic reading machines have become easier to use and more titles are available. The new tablets, like the iPad or Galaxy, also provide features like internet searching, cameras, and email access. These multi-use devices are great when you are traveling.

While Solvay Public Library may not have the resources to provide all electronic sources, here is what we do have:
> books-on-CD that you can borrow
> Playaways (pre-loaded MP3 players with one audiobook on it) that you can borrow
>Tumblebooks – children’s picture books that you read Online

Some websites that provide eBooks for free:
Project Gutenberg – great for classics

Online Books Page, a collection collected by University of Pennsylvania.

Digital Book Index – has children’s books and lots of nonfiction and reference.

Google Books – lots of classics, but also magazines and children’s books. They also have books to buy, so scroll down and you will see the list of freebies.

To place a hold on one of these titles, just click on it!

These are just a few of the Playaways available at Solvay Public Library. To search all of OCPL libraries for Playaways, use “playaway” as a keyword in your search.

Playaway is the simplest way to listen to an audiobook on the go. With the audio already contained within, and a battery to make it play, there’s nothing left to do but plug in earphones and enjoy.

As the first self-playing audiobook, Playaway brings pages to life at the push of a button. Audio content and simple, digital technology are now merged into an easy-to-use, self-contained player. And weighing only two ounces, Playaway is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand and goes anywhere you do!

Solvay Public Library has started a new collection of Playaways available to check-out and are in the Hazard Room. We have adult and teen titles. You cannot place holds on our Playaways, but you can locate others in the OCPL system by typing “playaway” as a keyword.
